There are many options for you, as the player, to help Misfortune choose, such as whether to take along her toy unicorn or rock on her new grand adventure. On thing that interested me about the demo is the concept of choices. I get the feeling that this game is going to have many such moments. Which is damn heartbreaking, in a sense, and also believably childlike. The narrator tells her that he has a game for her to play, with Eternal Happiness as the reward, and Misfortune is eager to play in order to get that prize and give it to her mother. Misfortune can also hear the narrator’s voice, though, and so is guided through a grand adventure with the help of who she calls Mr. It combines the real and the fantastical, and gives hints at the adventure to come without revealing too much.Įarly on, the narrator speaks only to you, introducing you to Misfortune and telling you that today is the day Misfortune will die. Though of course that does get introduced, in instances such as Misfortune crossing the road next to her house and seeing, for a moment, a dead landscape and the shadow of a monster coming closer. Despite the art style being reminiscent of the Madeline children’s books, right from the beginning you can see darker themes emerge, things that are mundane enough to be truly scary, without needing to bring in any sort of supernatural element. Her mother drinks a whole lot of “juice” (read: alcohol), her father often sleeps in the car, and both her parents get in a lot of fights that result in physical violence. You play as Misfortune, an adorable little girl whose life is… not that great.

The demo is short, only about 20 minutes long if you take the time to look around and explore all of the options available to you, but that 20 minutes serves as an excellent teaser for what’s to come. So naturally, with that description being right up my alley, I had to give the demo a try as soon as I could.

Made by Killmonday Games, the team behind the cult hit, Fran Bow (which I sadly have yet to play must remedy that), Little Misfortune seems like another adventure game that will capture the minds and imaginations of those who love darker and more twisted experiences in their games while still maintaining a sense of explorative whimsy.
